And those structures have very strong walls and huge slabs of natural stone on the roofs which are usually cemented firmly down. Other places on mainland Scotland bore the brunt of the weather too. The Cairngorm Mountains were slammed while at lower levels there was floods on numerous roads as rain contributed to the wintertime woes.

Certainly we expect to have winter weather up here in Orkney yet it’s still little fun when we receive a battering. Certainly the 1st two thirds of November were really quite warm with roses still flourishing and birds getting mixed-up and creating nests and courting. They must surely have got the message now, that they were being a bit hasty.
